STATE TENNIS UPDATE -- After receiving a first-round bye, Lily Beam and Will Castleberry cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the quarterfinal round of Mixed Doubles. They advance to the semifinal round along with Hunter Boatman in Boys Singles, and Jonathan Medina and Nevan Schur in Boys Doubles. By advancing to the semifinals, all are guaranteed to come home with a state medal!! Congratulations!! Now -- LET'S GO FOR GOLD!!! Semifinals will be played tomorrow morning, with the finals in the afternoon.

Our Vernon tennis players will take the court tomorrow at the UIL Class 3A Singles & Doubles State Tournament being held in San Antonio. Our Vernon ISD Band Program will be presenting its Spring Concert tomorrow evening. The concert begins at 6 p.m., at the Wilbarger Auditorium. The 6th Grade and 7th Grade Bands will perform, and the final band on the stage will be the Sweepstakes Award-Winning Roarin' Lion Band!

Our Middle School and High School teachers were treated to breakfast burritos today as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. The burritos were from our VMS & VHS PTO group, and were generously donated by Fancher Electric and the Streit Clinic. We appreciate their support!

Our five Vernon Lion tennis players who qualified for the UIL Class 3A Singles & Doubles State tournament will be leaving for San Antonio in the morning and we will be sending them off with an escort down Wilbarger. The Vernon Police Department & Fire Department, and Wilbarger County Sheriff's Office will lead the way down Wilbarger at approximately 8:20 a.m., and then turn right at Main Street. Park along Wilbarger, honk your horn and wave as they drive by, or step out on the sidewalk and give them a cheer.
These youngsters are being recognized as our McCord Students of the Month for April!! Students receiving that special honor are Victor Romero, Pre-Kindergarten; Delilah Wiest, Kindergarten; Emilia Mullins, Specials & Kindergarten; and Alexander Whittington, 1st Grade. Congratulations!! Outstanding job!! Keep it up!!
Vernon will be represented by three Lions and Lady Lions -- Tru Gipson, Breasha Waggoner and Tevan Evans -- at the UIL Class 3A State Track & Field Meet which will be held May 14 in Austin. The athletes qualified by finishing first or second in their event at the UIL 3A Region 1 Track & Field Meet held last weekend in Abilene. Tru was the regional champion in the Boys 100-meter Dash, while Breasha was the regional champ in the Girls High Jump. Tevan finished second in the Boys High Jump and will be making his second straight trip to the state tournament. We're closing in on the end of this school year and that means our VMS 8th graders are leaving for high school. Our 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony will be held Tuesday, May 19, at the Wilbarger Auditorium.
