GOOD LUCK!! to our Lions tennis team as they travel to Abilene today to face Brownwood in the Area Round of the UIL Class 4A Team Tennis Playoffs. The match is set for 11 a.m., at Hardin Simmons University. Vernon received a bye in the bi-district round of the playoffs, while Brownwood defeated Monahans. The Vernon-Brownwood winner will meet the winner of Peaster-Holliday in the next round of the playoffs.
Google is hosting an informal come-and-go community event next Tuesday at the Wilbarger Auditorium. This is a great opportunity for the community to visit with Google officials, pick up some information and ask questions.
Yesterday our McCord 1st grade classes visited the traveling TEA STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) trailer. Students in each class listened to a story and were then tasked with a project to complete. Mrs. White's class listened to "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" which gave the wolf's point of view. After listening to the story, the students had to build a house for one of the little pigs that would withstand the wolf (a fan) blowing on it. The students had to draw the plan for the house, "purchase" supplies -- construction paper, straws, popsicle sticks, tape and glue -- and then work together to build their house. The students were divided in 4 groups, and each group's house withstood the wolf test!!
Cited for their performances in the Lions' game against Idalou were Tyrone McBride and Tyce Payne. Tyrone is an offensive guard and earned the Offensive MVP for his physical blocking against the Wildcats. Tyce is a linebacker and was named the Defensive MVP after recording 21.5 tackles in the Lions' 7-0 loss to top-ranked Idalou.
Last Friday McCord wrapped up it's Book Fair Week with a Burgers and Books event. Parents, grandparents and special friends joined their student for lunch and then shopped at the Book Fair, with students showing their guests which books were on their wish lists. From the way it looked, most students were able to mark at least a few books off their wish list. Families, thank you for supporting our Book Fair and for encouraging your student to read. Reading to your child and having them read to you is not only a great bonding time, but is one of the best ways to help a child build a strong educational foundation.
Our Lady Lions will wrap up the first round of District 6-3A volleyball action this evening as they travel to Wichita Falls to take on the City View Lady Mustangs. The action will begin at 5 p.m., at the City View Gym with the JV games. The varsity game will begin at approximately 6 p.m. Good luck Lady Lions!!!
Today is Instructional Coaches Day and Vernon ISD has a wonderful instructional team to celebrate!! Led by Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Sarah Swatzell, our instructional coaches -- Randilyn Mayo, McCord; Amanda Brown, Vernon Elementary; Dody Lehman, VMS/VHS; and Jammie Hamm, VMS/VHS -- provide our teachers with tips and support to help them be the best they can be in the classroom.
