Our VHS tennis team saw its fall season come to an end earlier than we wanted it to yesterday afternoon, as Lions fell to Canyon West Plains in the bi-district round of the Class 4A Team Tennis playoffs. Playing up a classification and facing tougher competition will just make you that much better for the Class 3A Team Tennis playoffs and for UIL Singles & Doubles competition that are played in the spring. Just keep on working! We're proud of all the players and coaches!!

Yesterday, these VHS students received a free Kona Ice after their names were drawn from a group of students who had perfect attendance. Receiving a free treat were (front row, from left) Jesaida Hernandez, Juanita Salazar, Bu Meh and Merrick Byars; (back row) Shyne Rodriguez, Julian Saucedo, Keigan Ballard and J'Dyn Cooper. The Kona Ice treat was provided by the VMS & VHS PTO. See, perfect attendance does pay off!

This tower was made by 2nd and 3rd graders and is on the stage in the cafeteria of the new Vernon Elementary School. The tower was inspired by the students' study of artist Dale Chihuly, who works with glass. There is an estimated 500 bottles painted with a variety of tempera paints, acrylic paints and permanent markers that make up the tower.

These students were selected as VMS Students of the Week last week: 6th Grade -- Kynsleigh Hamm & Marcus Hurtado; 7th Grade -- Maritza Ornelas & Cameron Streit; and 8th Grade -- Maddie Sanchez & Caybryn Gomez (not pictured). The Vernon ISD Administrative Center and our school campuses will be closed Thursday, Friday and Monday, for an early Fall break. Our administrative offices and school campuses will resume regular hours on Tuesday.

2nd thru 5th graders walked into their new Vernon Elementary School building for the first time as students this morning, as they went through a "mock school day" at their new campus. There were plenty of smiles, along with "Oooohs" and "Aaaaws," to go around, as the students were led to their homerooms and were then shown where their other classrooms were located. Students also ate lunch in their new cafeteria before being bused back to Central and Shive for the final 2 hours of school at the old campuses. The first day of school at the new campus will be this coming Tuesday, Oct. 10

Earning VHS Teacher of the Month honors for September was Roarin' Lion Band co-director Aaron Burr, while the VHS Staff of the Month honor for September went to classroom coach Valorie Handley. Congratulations to both!!!
