Tomorrow is Vernon ISD's last day before our Christmas Break and it is an early release day.

Last week, third grade students in Ms. TiSierra White's class had a fun -- and tasty -- assignment that brought math to life and helped them learn how to find perimeter and area. In a math exercise, each student was given a handful of Cheez-Its to use as their measuring tools. They arranged the crackers in various shapes on their desks to calculate the perimeter and area. They worked together to solve problems and discover how the size of their shapes affected the measurements. The best part? After completing the exercise they got to enjoy eating the Cheez-Its as a well-earned snack.

Our VES staff held an Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest earlier this week and there were some great entries. First place went to Mr. Burr, while Ms. Self finished second and Mrs. Inman took third.

On Monday, our 3rd Grade held its Culture and Heritage Fair. The students rotated through different classrooms and learned about a few different cultures and businesses in town. Mayor Pam Goslin spoke on the duties of a mayor and the City's responsibilities to its residents. Taylor Edmonds spoke on art and her business, Paint Your Peace; Cooper Alexander talked about the Red River Valley Museum, as well as local ranching at the Waggoner Ranch and the Alexander Ranch; Jessica Miller spoke about being a local author and her book "Teach Kate"; Manuel Perez talked about Mexican culture; and Shane Jansa spoke about farming.

Members of the VES Student Council went shopping yesterday, selecting gifts for the stars they selected from the Vernon Jaycees' Star Tree, which helps ensure children in need in the community receive something on Christmas morning. The Student Council raised the funds for the shopping spree in November with their annual "Turkey Bowl." VES students donated $3,100 during the fundraiser and the Student Council used that money to purchase gifts for 15 stars from the Star Tree.

This fall Vernon ISD started a new program at Vernon Elementary involving fourth grade students. The district provided free swimming lessons to fourth graders who attended after-school tutorials. The goal was to provide students with the opportunity to learn the fun and life-saving skill of swimming, as well as help the students improve in the classroom. We had quite a few students make the trip to Wichita Falls yesterday to participate in the District 7-3A Elementary School UIL Literary Meet that was held at City View Elementary. All of the students did a great job! A story including the results of the meet will be posted early next week. We are very proud of all of our students who took part in the literary meet. They did a great job of representing VES.
