All McCord classes held Valentine's Day parties last Friday to celebrate the day of love.
Last Saturday was Old Timers Day at Jabe Brazzle Field as the 2025 Lions held the VHS Baseball Alumni Game. Players and fans both battled windy and cold conditions, but had a lot of fun at the ballpark. The Alumni team got the best of the current Lions, 14-6. A huge thank you and shoutout to the former Lions who came out to play. Members of the Alumni team were: Landry Gonzales (Class of 2020); Brysan Garrard & Tyler Smith (Class of 2018); Lane Sanders (Class of 2015); Brandon Urquizo (Class of 2013); Parker Johnson (Class of 2012); Tanner Kieschnick (Class of 2008); Kent Anderson (Class of 2006); Clint Kieschnick (Class of 1996); and T.J. Smith (Class of 1994).
Saturday is School Resource Officer Day and Vernon High School is blessed to have one of the best in Officer Cody Cook. Today, Officer Cook was presented with a card in appreciation for all that he does to help ensure the safety of our students, teachers and staff. A VHS graduate who has been with the Vernon PD for over 15 years, Officer Cook has served as our SRO for two years.

Save The Date!! Our VES Kids Heart Challenge kicks off on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and ends on Friday, March 7. During this time our students will discover ways to take care of their hearts and brains through fun activities while practicing kindness and gratitude. They will also learn ways to de-stress. Plus, the students have the chance to earn PE equipment for our school while raising funds to protect all hearts. VHS senior Izzy Espinoza left this morning for the Class 5A State Wrestling Tournament being held Friday and Saturday in Houston. Our VHS Valentine's King & Queen will be crowned tomorrow night at the Valentine's Dance. Nominees are (seated, from left) Aubrey Castorena, Emily Garcia, Kaitlyn Beam, Kellan Byars, Mijah Johnson, Ke'Maria McBride, Zayleigh Sweet, and Marhianna Johnson; (back row) Parker Flynn, Linden Farrell, J'Dyn Cooper, Landon Bynum, Josiah Greigger, Ivan Barrera, and Ethan Evans. Not pictured is Jackson Aydelott. The dance will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be music, food, drinks and dancing!! Tickets are $5 if purchased early, or $10 at the door.
VHS senior Izzy Espinoza leaves tomorrow for the Class 5A State Wrestling Tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday in Houston. A sendoff well be held for Izzy tomorrow at 9 a.m., at the VHS Fieldhouse. He will then be escorted down Wilbarger Street. Be a part of the sendoff by parking on Wilbarger and honking your horn as they go by, or step outside your office and give a good luck wave. Let's send this young man off to state in style.
The last two weeks of February are short weeks for our VISD students. There is no school Monday, Feb. 17, for a teacher/staff Professional Development Day, and Feb. 21 is an Early Release Friday. Students are also out Monday, Feb. 24, for a teacher/staff Work Day, and Feb. 28 is also an Early Release Friday.

Three of our Vernon Lions have earned honorable mention honors for the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State Football Team. Congratulations to junior center Keigan Ballard, junior offensive guard Christian Gallegos, and freshman linebacker Tyce Payne on receiving this recognition. Congratulations guys!!
Scoring 1,000 points in a high school career is quite a milestone and on Feb. 4 in a game against Iowa Park, senior Mijah Johnson eclipsed that mark! Mijah was recognized for her accomplishment last night during halftime of the Lions' game against City View. Mijah was a four-year varsity starter for the Lady Lions, and helped Vernon reach the playoffs her junior and senior year. Congratulations Mijah!!!

Our boys' 9th grade basketball team wrapped up a perfect 14-0 season in district last night with a victory over the City View freshmen! Great job and a big thumbs up goes out to Coach Bah and the players -- Joseph Eneanya, Tevan Evans, Karter Flynn, King Freeman, Thomas Gonzales, Zack Harjo, Zander Leija, Tyce Payne, Trey Rivas, Truett Schur, and Jaxon Urquizo.
A couple of times each month VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward delivers birthday cards to VISD employees who are celebrating birthdays that month. Sunday was Hilda Moreno's birthday and Dr. Ward dropped by VHS today to deliver her birthday card.

Our Lions close out the season at home tonight as they host the City View Mustangs in at District 7-3A contest. The freshman boys get the action started at 4:30 p.m., followed by the JV game and then the Lions' game against the Mustangs. The varsity game should start at approximately 7 p.m. All games will be played at D.O. Fulton Gym.
Congratulations to 11 Roarin' Lion Band members who qualified for state at the Region 7 UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest that was held Saturday in Wichita Falls. All high school band members who received a "Superior" rating on a Class One solo or ensemble, along with junior high school band members who were part of an ensemble and received a "Superior" rating on a Class One arrangement, earned a trip to the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Contest that will be held in May.
