Earlier this week, VHS learned our health occupation department was the Our Blood Institute High School Blood Drive Champion for the 2024-25 school year. The award comes with a $1,250 scholarship. The announcement was made at a high school workshop hosted by Our Blood Institute at the MSU Sikes Lake Center in Wichita Falls. Students in our Patient Care Technician class attended the workshop that featured engaging activities and educational sessions focused on the importance of blood donation and strategies to encourage others to donate. We would like to thank all of those who took time to donate at our blood drives last year. Winning this award is not possible without all of you, and we appreciate each and every one who donated.

Congratulations to Claire Mayo for winning the Girls Division of the Frenship Fallout held Tuesday at the Meadowbrook Canyon Golf Course in Lubbock. Not only did Claire win the girls' championship, she also claimed the Longest Drive Award. There was just one Longest Drive Award handed out at the tournament, which means Claire not only beat the other girl golfers, she also beat all the boy golfers as well!!

Tuesday in Mrs. Birbeck's CNA class the students conducted a hands-on experiment to visually demonstrate how germs can spread through person-to-person contact and the importance of proper hand hygiene. To simulate the presence of germs, glitter and glitter glue were used. A few students applied the glitter to their hands and then interacted with their classmates by shaking hands or giving high fives. This allowed the class to observe how quickly and easily "germs" can be transferred from one person to another through casual contact.
Following the demonstration, students were instructed to wash their hands using proper handwashing techniques as taught in class. Once everyone had completed the handwashing process, we examined their hands to determine how much of the glitter remained. This provided a clear and impactful visual on the effectiveness of thorough hand hygiene, reinforcing the importance of proper technique in infection control.

This afternoon all VMS students gathered in the gym for an assembly to discuss with students the rules both Vernon ISD and local enforcement must follow when students use certain words -- regardless of whether or not those words were spoken or written in fun. Speaking at the assembly were VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward, Vernon Police Chief Dan Birbeck, and Sheriff Deputy Ronnie Adams. Chief Birbeck explained once a student speaks or writes words against a classmate, teacher or the school and someone perceives those words as a threat -- even if they were written or spoken as a joke -- law enforcement and VISD will treat the situation as a real threat. With that in mind, Chief Birbeck said the outcome of the incident would be the student getting arrested, and he reminded students in the State of Texas anyone 10 years of age and older could be arrested for making a threat. Dr. Ward and Police Chief Birbeck told the students this was their first and only warning on the matter
