We have some extra-special teachers and staff here at McCord Elementary, and this year Teacher of the Year and Staff Member of the Year fit into that category. Selected by their peers were Kristin Chavira, Teacher of the Year, and Sandra Edwards, Staff Member of the Year. Congratulations to them both. And, thanks to them both for their work both inside the classroom and out. They're both amazing!!

Thursday morning Lady Lion senior Klancy Sherrill signed to run track at Dallas Baptist University. She will be looking to qualify for the regional track meet for the fourth straight year tomorrow when she joins her teammates competing in the District 7-3A & 8-3A Area Track & Field Meet. Lady Lion golfer Claire Mayo will be teeing it up today in the Class 3A Region 1 Golf Tournament. The two-day event is being played on the Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird, which is just outside Abilene. Claire advanced to her third consecutive regional tourney by being the top medalist at the District 7-3A Golf Tournament who was not a member of a team that qualified to advance. Good luck Claire!!

Last week students in Ms. Garrett's classes heard from two guest speakers. Speaking to students in the Principles of Education and Training classes was retired teacher and administrator Mrs. Marylin Leasure. She shared her own career path with the students, and also discussed what things they should consider when pursuing a career in education.
The guest speaker for students in the Human Growth and Development classes was Mrs. Kori Eakin, who is the district's school psychologist and teacher of the visually impaired. She shared a powerpoint presentation on teaching students with special needs with the classes.

We have a lot of talented students here at VES and they're going to get the opportunity to shine on stage!! Our VES Talent Show hosted by our VES Student Council is scheduled for Friday, May 1, and it's time to begin our search for stars! The deadline for a student to turn in an audition entry form is this Friday -- April 17. Auditions will be held for 2nd and 3rd graders on Thursday, April 23, and for 4th and 5th graders on Friday, April 24. Those selected for the talent show will practice on April 28 (2nd & 3rd grade) and April 30 (4th & 5th grade) before performing on May 1.

On Friday, our wonderful assistant principals -- Mr. Boswell and Ms. King -- were surprised with their own special cakes in honor of National Assistant Principal Week. The cakes were just a small token to show how much everyone at VES appreciates them for all they do for our students and staff.
The Lady Lions claimed one event championship in the running events of the District 7-3A Track & Field Meet which concluded Thursday in Holliday. The Lady Lions finished third in the overall team standings in the Girls Division. Our Lions are home tonight for District 7-3A games against the Holliday Eagles. The JV baseball game will begin at 4 p.m., with the first pitch of the varsity game set for 7 p.m., at Jabe Brazzle Field. The Lions have their district open week next week before wrapping up their season with a two-game series against Bowie on April 21 and April 24. Good luck Lions!!
Our Lady Lions close out their 2026 softball season today, as they host the Holliday Lady Eagles in a District 7-3A game. The game will start at 5 p.m., at Ronda Havins Softball Field. Our softball seniors will be recognized on April 21, prior to the varsity baseball game. Good luck Lady Lions!!
This week is National Assistant Principal Week and Vernon ISD has some outstanding assistant principal at our campuses!! All of them are a great asset to their principal, and the staff and students on their campuses. They consistently go the extra mile, and Vernon ISD would just like them to know their work is noticed and greatly appreciated!
As a part of Ms. Owen's Kindergarten Gifted and Talented project for April, our GT students are learning about the life cycle of chickens through a hands-on incubation experience. Yesterday, students placed eggs in an incubator and will now be carefully monitoring their development each day. Throughout the process, they will be researching and practicing "candling," a method used to observe the growth of the embryo inside the egg. To say organized, Ms. Owen helped the students create a calendar to track the number of days the eggs have been in the incubator, as well as the projected hatch date. The class is also keeping a journal to record observations, reflections, and new learning as the students follow the exciting journey from egg to chick!
The District 7-3A Track & Field Meet kicked off Monday with the field events, along with the running preliminaries. Here are a few pictures from the field events. The finals of the running events will be held tonight at Eagle Stadium in Holliday. The finals will begin at 5 p.m. The Vernon Lions are currently leading the team race in the Boys Division, while the Lady Lions are third in the Girls Division.
